urgent

snatch the pebble from my hand....
You may want to start clicking links and bookmarking the download address's. Google took down 'behind the counter' and also one of my other sites recently - this could go at anytime. (Or may not) if you want something i strongly suggest grabbing favs first and allot of bookmarking.

If this site goes down i wanted to say..

We've shared in all types of genres that touched us in childhood and beyond and that I think is pretty damn cool - that one world sharing a moment thing (Ya I know its cliche but it is nonetheless true).

I never wanted money or praise (outside of the occasional thank you) but I do want folks to think about 'paying it forward'. Keep the comic sharing going, share a digital comic with a friend, buy a comic for a young kid who may never had one (or a cool one) - in effect pass on the dream. Above all what i'm trying to say is Help someone out in some way when they are in need and 'zenjoy'.

zen
I hope you enjoy the site!

This is unthinkable - no Crosseyed Cyclops! I visit your site almost every day! I'm keeping my fingers crossed Zen. Thanks for all the past stuff and I hope you continue long into the future.

Best regards Kevin.

hope, it doesn't happen. I'm pushing my thumbs, as they say in germany for crossing your fingers....
Good luck and thanks a million times for the fine comics you made available

You have made a lasting contribution to my enjoyment of comics--I hadn't read comics in a while and you made it possible for me to explore so many great comics I had no access to. Thanks so much. Your work is appreciated.

It may not happen but, just in case, thanks for everything. I'm too busy bookmarking to say much more. I found fantastic stuff here unavailable anywhere else. By the way, my ESL students love the older comics

Hi Zen,

I know you haven't heard from me before but I'm Kenny from Alabama, now transplanted and living in Ohio. I'm really sorry about the trouble that Google is giving you. I really hope you can somehow manage to keep your comic blog. It Especially means a whole lot to me because when I was a kid growing up I collected comic books. At this time I'm 57 years old so we're talking from the '60's onward. Then, when I was in my 20's I allowed my dad to Finally talk me into selling the whole shebang to a street vendor for $20.00! I had over 200 Archie series and at least 400 more of various titles, the first 3 issues of the Green Hornet with Bruce Lee, the first 3 Dark Shadows, etc. I've regretted "giving them away" ever since. But thanx to you & your blog I've managed to collect another batch of comics (albiet Virtual Digital ones with no monetary value)even replacing a few that I lost. So I just wanted to thank you very much for what you've done, and here's hoping that even if you lose this blog, you can open up another in its place. I'm a musician also and it seems like the music blogs are dropping left & right too. So I'm very afraid that soon we may not have Anywhere to download Anything at all. I say that it's not the consumer's fault; the industries did this to themselves with all their greed & high prices.
Anyway, Good Luck, God Bless, Keep The Faith, Hang In There, and I Hope you'll send me an invite if you wind up having to open another blog!
Kenny.

Zen Tiger:

At the risk of sounding repetitive, let me add a heartfelt THANKS! for being the single best Internet source for downloading old comics (and occasionally other media formats) without the hassle and risk of having to deal with torrent streams.

As all of these comments show, you will definitely be missed if Google or other evil forces manage to drive you away. Hang in there if you can!

Thanks a lot Zen. It was a lot of fun to participate in discussions about comics again. I've missed that since my job as a comic shop manager ended with the closing of the shop about ten years ago. Feel free to keep in touch, if you still have my contact info. I've got yours.

Thanks for all the fun in any case, ZT. Here's hoping...

Sad news. You have so much rare stuff here! I hope they leave you alone, but if they don't we'll be Googling your name in case you set up elsewhere. Who knows, maybe Google will be too busy helping the Chinese government to censor the net to come after you!

i've mostly lurked hereabouts, but this is really sad news - you've been a godsend for me you really have and i've lost count of the wonders you've uncovered for me. good luck in the future...

Hi from Spain, Zen. Very, very, very sad news... HUGE thanks for all this wonders, dude.

What if you make this blog private, with a Registration?. I remember recently this happened with the "My Comic Post" blog, and it has survived.

Wow. I look foward to checking in here everyday & I am often surprised at the treasures found. I truly hope you can continue "the Basement" & I want to thank you for bringing so much of my childhood back to share with my own son. I could never afford to buy all the classic Monster mags etc that I've enjoyed here & I certainly couldn't let my 9yr old handle the classic books. This has been a great way to pass down my love of these things in an age without an Uncle Forry here to help me along. Thanks for everything "Uncle" Zen Tiger!!!

Hey every one I just wanted to say your welcome for all of these thank you messages. They actually mean allot than i thought they would - especially those who have shared personal stories. This was the whole reason i started this blog - to share these old memories with friends old and new and even those ive never met.

I am going to keep going one way or another so keep Zen Tiger and also crosseyed cyclops in mind cause if this goes down i will return in one way or another.

thanks again for the thanks and im glad weve been able to share in this gems from yesteryear and today.
enjoy the site!

The reason we and other creators and friends have and will continue to complain about you is that you have, without any permission whatsoever, posted entire runs of copyrighted works that creators currently rely upon to sell for the support of themselves and their families. Despite all the high-fivin' self-congrats, that makes you a pirate pure and simple. You are distributing what is not your right to distribute and for that, you definitely do not have any of our thanks.

Zen Tiger said...

I try not to post new stuff that is selling and if there is anything someone wants removed i gladly have done so and will continue to when contacted. I am trying to promote the industry not degrade it.

KibL said...

good luck, Zen and all the rest of you.
thank you so much for all your effort, i love this blog.
i've seen all sorts of comics that are long out of print, been able to investigate artists who influenced the ones i grew up admiring and gained an appreciation of other artists i'd never heard of.
like, how about that Klaus Nordling! the Barker is genuinely entertaining, even outside of historical interest.
i've also made my own "best of" collections to pass on to friends with less time on their hands.
all the best,
Kibl.

I seriously doubt the above "anonymous" is involved in any creative industry. the attacks on these blogs seem to be from disguntled fanboys looking for something to vent their rage or enraged ebay sellers who no longer are getting stupid huge money for long out of print collectables.

if the rights holders are so concerned about "lost income" over things out of print for 10, 20, 50 years, then maybe they should make them available. put up their own websites. I'd gladly pay to download a full run of WEIRD TALES.

I do wish blogger insisted on -proof- of rights infringement before they delete anything. I am willing to bet 98% of those complaining and "reporting" have nothing to do with any comics, music etc.

KibL said...

btw: since downloading a few EC titles from here i actually went out and bought a load of the Russ Cochran reprints of 2fisted tales and weird science.
the difference in quality between jpgs of 100dpi scans and real litho prints (or even 600dpi digital prints) is much more dramatically perceptible than that between 192kbps mp3 and cd audio.
i mean, really these scans serve no more than a "preview" function.
i doubt very much that i would have paid for those comics if i hadn't been appetised by the previews on offer here.
of course, most of this stuff isn't for sale anyway and much of it is public domain, it's copyright having expired.
i bet hardly anyone (with sense) sees these scans as adequate substitutes for the real things.
i don't know about the films but i bet they aint exactly dvd quality either.
strictly preview and educational purposes.
long live the crosseyed academy of low-brow culture.

Kibl, Cool to hear that youve been getting friends interested in some of these 'lost' classics by making 'best of' packs - great idea! Something I might even do (If i ever get time -ha) and your right about quality of many scans vrs the real pages plus what can beat the actual feel of paper in your hands (and that musty old comic smell which gathers on books over 20yrs) plus its not like you can turn around and sell your digital copy on ebay.

above all you mentioned the one thing that still amazes me as i amass more comics - those founding artists who got so many other artists interested in the field. Ive been buying comics since i was 5 or 6 at least and i never knew of some of these awesome guys. a wealth of treasures that if not for scanners i may have totally missed out on within my life.

as far as movies you may be surprised by many of the films on here - others not so. (The file for the serial Adventures of Captain Marvel is better than the actual DVD i bought of it - go figure eh?)

well glad your liking the blog - enjoy
ZT

Scott - you hit the nail on the head about actual copywrite ownership thing and blogger. and on the topic of great old comics not getting reprinted. oh well maybe this digital revelution will spur them on eh?

- enraged ebay sellers - too funny :)

why is it that it's always the ANONYMOUS commentor that berates you for being a thief and a cad? come on, dude, if you feel that passionately about it, put your name up! honest, man, no one's gonna come 'round your house and beat you up. grow a spine, why don't'ch'ya?

zen, mate, this site has been the must-visit-every-day place for me for God knows how long now. there's been a whole load of stuff
here that I would never have known had it not been for you upping it. seriously, there's a pretty fair bunch of stuff on my own blog that wouldn't be there if not for your good self. I can't thank you enough. I hope they don't shut you down, man, but if they do, trust me, we'll all be following you wherever you go. but let's hope not, 'ey?

fingers crossed!

Den - your very welcome! I know money is tight everywhere right now especially when it comes to things of pleasure such as mags and comics. Even in times of wealth its hard to find allot of things in ones area so im very glad folks can find things they may never would have otherwise. Well I hope it picks up for everyone soon but till then hopefully these small guilty pleasures help to pick us all up and give us a few moments of dreams.
take care
