Tales from Bad Kids who love Comics

~sticky post~

I think most if not all of us have been a bad kid in one way or another when it comes to comics. Maybe we said we were going to sleep and turned off the light in order to trick the parents meanwhile hiding under the blanket we turned on the flashlight to read. Maybe we hid them in folders from the school teacher ? Maybe even a couple of us got a hold of 'forbidden' comics which we werent supposed to read at such a tender age. A few even crossed the line and stole a comic or two....

This is the place to share your experiences ! (Don't say anything that would get the authorities after you :) Ha! the statutes of limitations should hopefully be expired by now)

Here's my earliest memory of getting in trouble when it came to comics (believe me this trend would go on for many years)

This one comes from a time around 5-6 in my life. I had just received a couple of coins from my uncle (.50 i think it was) and it was burning a hole in my pocket. I remember strongly thinking about a cover on a comic I had seen recently at the store - and how badly I wanted to see what was inside. I tried in vain to get anyone in the house to give me a ride to the store. So I decided to take matters into my own hands and proceeded out the back of the house (making everyone think I was merely going out to play in the yard) This wouldn't have stuck in my mind so bad if not for the fact that I had to climb the small picket fence which confined me from my destination. While scaling i managed to cut my hand , this didn't seem to bother me until I had reached the store some 4 blocks away . You see I had grabbed the comics I had wanted (which happened to include the one I had originally wanted so bad - a Conan issue) and set them on the counter along with the coins when the salesman looked at me strange and asked if I was ok. It was then I noticed my hand was lightly dripping blood but even worse it had gotten on my comics!

Thankfully the salesman gave me some papertowels to clean up with (one or two i remember wrapping my hand in to get the blood to stop) and i took the rest to clean the covers of the books the best i could. Once cleaned up i went out side the store and sat on the curb to read - well i was 6 i was probably just looking at the pictures!. I obviously become lost in the books because I never even noticed my Grandma yelling at me until she grabbed me by the back of the neck hoisting me up. I was being told how everyone was running around the neighborhood trying to find me and how worried they all were (with increasing anger in her voice) I was popped on the butt a couple times as i was led to the car and then driven back home. Which was bad and had me in some tears but worse of all she tossed the comics when we returned to the house. This was then foll0wed by recognition of my hand being hurt by my Grandma and then her getting some medicine (must have been peroxide cause i recall it hurting far worse after the medicine was applied than before... or maybe it was just the fact that I had lost my prize comics i had worked so hard to get.)

I still remember thinking - with tears on my face and blood drying on my hand that it was worth it just to see inside those covers!

In closing it would take 30 years and a computer before I ever found that Conan issue again! Zen Tiger
